The Establishment

The Young Philanthropist of Aspen (YPA) was established in the fall of 2005. The group began with three sophomores who were inspired by a service trip to New York to help the homeless, and were motivated to continue that community service in their home community. With the guidance of the Aspen Valley Medical Foundation (AVMF), the members were taught the basics of philanthropy and began planning future service projects like the one detailed below.

The Mission

The main objective of YPA is for young adults to get hands-on experience with philanthropy and community service. The organization aims to initiate activity in the Roaring Fork Valley through interactive experience and service projects that will directly assist members of the local community in need. YPA’s mission is to support youth involvement in the community and to provide members with a great learning experience that will provide them with concrete experience towards developing members into future leaders in philanthropy.

Community Involvement

YPA members reviewed the 36 non-profit agencies that the Aspen Valley Medical Foundation (AVMF) supports and selected its top four choices. They then thoroughly interviewed members of three of the deserving non-profits, and, at the AFMF annual meeting the group announced The Right Door as its first service organization to receive the benefit of YPA’s assistance. The Right Door specializes in substance abuse treatment, awareness and emergency services. Group members volunteered at a make-shift detox center during New Year’s Eve 2006 and coordinated an awareness campaign that aims to increase the visibility of the services provided and that encourages fellow students to program their emergency phone number into their cell phones. This project is the first of many that will benefit local non-profit agencies. YPA plans to be an active presence in the philanthropic and service community in future years.

The Commitment

YPA requires a six month commitment from all additional members. Projects and responsibilities will be rotated throughout memberships.
